One of the most famous children’s books of all time finally got a major motion picture adaptation, but reviews of the film are coming in spotty at best. A Wrinkle in Time, the 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, had its debut on the big screen over the weekend, taking in roughly $33 million domestically. That’s a more-than-solid figure though not enough to dethrone Black Panther ($41 million domestically), which is first for a fourth straight week. Still, that top-two finish is historically significant, as both movies feature diverse casts and black directors. A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay, stars Storm Reid as protagonist Meg, and she’s joined by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, and Zach Galifianakis. While many reviews point out A Wrinkle in Time’s undeniable appeal to kids and its positive message of inclusion, they also make note that the movie itself isn’t all that great. CNN said: “Ava DuVernay's splashy adaptation seldom conjures the magic to which this big-screen exercise aspires—not a complete waste of time, certainly, but too mundane to provide a consistently good one.” Rotten Tomatoes critics assigned the flick a 42 percent fresh score, with the audience score coming in even lower at 34 percent. But Social is actually far more supportive: Over the past day, “Wrinkle in Time” has a 60 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
