No matter the year or the season, the Olympics are often fraught with international complications and personal dramas. That makes sense, considering the Games bring together countless countries from around the world, many of whom don’t like each other all that much. But the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, are especially rife with controversy, and that’s dragging down Social’s appetite for the festivities. The opening ceremony is set for Friday, and with it, the first geopolitical moment to monitor: North and South Korean athletes will be marching together during the introductions as part of an effort by both nations to thaw their brink-of-Armageddon relations. And then there are the “banned” Russians. The International Olympic Committee refused to allow Russia to compete this year after it was caught cheating in 2014. But there are still at least 168 contenders who will be able to participate in the Games under the title of “Olympic Athletes From Russia,” a fairly meaningless distinction. Meanwhile, in the personal drama department, Vice-President Mike Pence, who will be at the Olympics, has been firing off tweets issuing his “support” for openly gay figure skater Adam Rippon while denying his own anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policy positions. Last month, Rippon criticized Pence and reportedly declined to speak with him after the Veep’s camp tried to set up a meeting. Add it all up, and Social will still be watching, but not with much enthusiasm. Over the past three days, “Winter Olympics” has a 57 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
