The so-called War on Drugs saw the makings of a ceasefire during the Obama Administration, but it’s threatening to return to Ronald Reagan-esque levels under President Trump. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has indicated a willingness to “prosecute more drug and gun cases and pursue mandatory minimum sentences,” according to the Washington Post, and has previously given some less-than-comforting responses about marijuana use, saying “good people” don’t smoke weed. How recreational and medicinal drugs are viewed today is a far cry from how they were viewed in the 1970s when Richard Nixon first started the War on Drugs, which became a rallying cry for future presidents, too. The number of incarcerations in the United States for drug possession jumped from the tens of thousands in the ‘70s and 80’s to the hundreds of thousands in the ‘90s. Disproportionally affected were people of color, especially African-Americans. The War on Drugs in 2017 elicits strong disapproval—just 15 percent of users on Social have a positive opinion of what many on the left and right consider badly failed policy.
