Real Excitement About Facebook’s Virtual Reality Facebook took a risk in 2014 when it purchased Oculus VR, a development company building a virtual reality headset. The technology was new and untried at the time and required advanced equipment. But Facebook’s bet looks to be paying off, with Oculus releasing its most accessible headset next year. The Oculus Go will sport a price tag under $200 and requires no smartphone or PC to operate. At a Silicon Valley conference on Wednesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was blunt about his ambitious. He wants to 1 billion people using virtual reality as often as they use Facebook, and he wants to get there soon. Social supports that goal and gives virtual reality 84 percent positive sentiments. Of course, VR adoption won’t be a smooth process, as Zuckerberg found out on Monday when he incurred a public backlash for broadcasting a virtual reality tour of Puerto Rico, still recovering from Hurricane Maria. Although Zuckerberg later apologized for the tone-deaf promo, he said that VR could one day be used to empathize with disaster victims around the world. –Hugo Guzman
