As the holidays get into full swing, President Trump is ramping up his “Merry Christmas” greetings as part of his fight against perceived political correctness. Trump had previously complained that “you don't see Merry Christmas anymore,” a point pushed by the conservative media, which contends that President Obama had deemphasized those two words in favor of “Happy Holidays.” Never shy about taking credit, Trump took the stage last Wednesday and proclaimed, "I told you that we would be saying Merry Christmas again,” essentially contending that he, in fact, had brought the phrase back into the public lexicon. Numerous fact-checkers have pointed out that President Obama actually said “Merry Christmas” all the time, including during weekly addresses and in easily accessible tweets. And the enormous National Christmas Tree currently in front of the White House has somehow been lit every year since 1923 (except during World War II), which includes plenty of Democratic administrations. Still, Trump’s reclamation of Merry Christmas is working in his favor: Over the last seven days, “Trump + Merry Christmas” has a 67 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
