President Trump is all about keeping “the base” happy, which means near-constant appeals to rural America. After all, in the 2016 election his percentage of votes in country counties was 29 points higher than in urban counties. But he’s facing a bit of trouble with farmers after a couple of decisions that could prove costly. Trump’s threatened trade war with China is the most prominent example. The Chinese government has threatened to retaliate with tariffs on soybeans, a major export crop in red states like Iowa and Missouri. Trump has acknowledged the potential hurt that would put on people, saying this week: “If, during the course of a negotiation they want to hit the farmers because they think that hits me, I wouldn’t say that's nice. But I tell you our farmers are great patriots.” He later added, “We'll make it up to them.” POTUS and his Cabinet are apparently also considering changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard, which is essentially a U.S. ethanol mandate. Any major moves there could devastate farmers who rely on corn crops. While the President believes farmers will stick with him, there may be evidence online that even though they are “great patriots,” those tilling America’s fields have their limits. Over the past 30 days, “Trump + Farmers” has a 27 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
