Taylor Swift has had her fair share of public feuds, but even she couldn’t have predicted a call-out by the American Civil Liberties Union. A few weeks ago, a website called Pop Front published a piece entitled, “Swiftly to the alt-right: Taylor subtly gets the lower case kkk in formation.” The story alleges that Swift is “an icon of white supremacist(s), nationalists, and other fringe groups” but takes some fairly dubious leaps to reach that conclusion. It didn’t pick up any traction until Swift’s lawyers demanded a retraction and threatened to sue the writer of the article, claiming it was “provably false and defamatory.” But the writer, Meghan Herning, retained the services of the ACLU, and in a six-page response made public this week, the organization repeatedly scolded Swift’s legal team for its assertions and threats of litigation. “Criticism is never pleasant, but a celebrity has to shake it off, even if the critique may damage her reputation,” the ACLU wrote in the letter, making a cheeky reference to Swift’s song “Shake It Off.” Over the last three days, “Taylor Swift + ACLU” has an 18 percent positive score on Social. --Alex Shultz
