Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood, able to nab essentially any acting role she desires. And yet for the second time in the past few years, she’s facing a fierce backlash after signing up to portray a character who many think would be better represented by someone else. In 2017 she starred in the film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, based on the Japanese manga written by Masamune Shirow. Johansson, who’s white, played Major Mira Killian, also known as Motoko Kusanagi. Most recently, Johansson was cast as Dante “Tex” Gill, a trans man, in a mob drama called Rub & Tug. Perhaps not surprisingly, both Ghost in the Shell (which bombed at the box office) and Rub & Tug have the same director, Rupert Sanders. For the record, Johansson doesn’t seem all too concerned with the idea that a trans actor should play a trans character. Her representative put out a statement about critics, which read, “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.” That’s a reference to three actors who experienced varying levels of critical acclaim after playing transgender characters. The sarcastic remark only earned Johansson more scorn. Over the past 14 days, “Scarlett Johansson” has just a 27 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
