FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe announced his departure on Monday after months of criticism from the President, and another deputy in a related position is looking like the next target of Trump and some Republicans. That would be Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to oversee the Russia investigation after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. Rosenstein is a Republican who was brought on by President Trump and overwhelmingly confirmed by the Senate last year, but he is apparently a main focus of an elusive and controversial memo crafted by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.). According to The New York Times, the memo – which the House has voted to make public – asserts that Rosenstein asked for an extended surveillance warrant for Carter Page, which could indicate that the Justice Dept. thinks the former Trump campaign official may have been a Russian agent, Newsweek says. Republicans have decided that Rosenstein’s request might have been a step too far because it possibly relied on unverified information in the explosive Christopher Steele dossier, which was first funded by anti-Trump Republicans and later the Democratic National Committee. If Rosenstein were kicked to the curb – and some top Republicans are cautioning against that – his replacement could put the Mueller investigation on a tighter leash or even shut it down. But Rosenstein shouldn’t be looking for any support on Social: Over the past 14 days, “Rod Rosenstein” pulls just 30 percent positives on 30dB. –Alex Shultz
