Janelle Monáe 's Afro-futurist concept albums have always pushed the hip-hop envelope, but last week she broke a few more barriers when she came out as pansexual in an interview with Rolling Stone. A new term for many, pansexuality is defined by GLAAD as attraction to all people regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity. The reveal was long-awaited by Monáe 's fans, as the artist has dodged questions about her sexuality for much of her career. Many of her songs, such as “Q.U.E.E.N.,” from 2013's “Electric Lady,” contain references to queer romance. But although Monáe has long been confident in her identity, many online are still struggling to figure out what pansexual even means. Some media outlets have taken it upon themselves to explain the term to newcomers, and USA Today ran a letter to the editor Friday laying out the differences between pansexuality and bisexuality. But social media users are supportive nonetheless. "Pansexual" gets 64 percent positive opinions on 30dB. –Hugo Guzman
