Murder mysteries have had a rough time at the box office recently, with 2014’s Gone Girl being the last significant one from a major movie studio. Last Friday’s premiere of Murder on the Orient Express from 20th Century Fox has bucked that trend. It’s the fourth adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel of the same name but the first on the big screen since 1974. Despite a star-studded cast, however, this crime classic hasn’t fared well among critics. The director (Kenneth Branagh), the cast (which includes Daisy Ridley and Johnny Depp) and set design were widely praised, but the film was dubbed a “needless remake” by Rolling Stone. Social was considerably more generous, giving Orient Express 71 percent positive sentiments and calling it a faithful adaptation. Social’s enthusiasm could lead to sequels, according to Branagh. The film ends with a teaser for a possible adaptation of Death on the Nile, Christie’s Orient Express sequel, and even James Prichard, Christie’s great-grandson, has expressed support. –Hugo Guzman
