Oil pipelines are back in the news after a major spill last week and a major development on Monday. Last Thursday, 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from the Keystone Pipeline in South Dakota. The company in charge of the pipeline, TransCanada, has sworn up and down that the environmental impact of the spill is minimal, and the Environmental Protection Agency is also looking into the matter. That may not mean much, though, considering that the EPA is currently run by Scott Pruitt, a big fan of fossil fuels and a climate change denier. And on Monday, the Nebraska Public Service Commission voted 3-2 to allow the Keystone XL Pipeline—an extension of the pipeline currently in service—to make its way through the state. The commission was barred from considering potentially negative environmental effects, like 210,000-gallon oil leak, by a 2011 state law. The 3-2 vote wasn’t a total win for TransCanada, however: The route through the state the commission approved was not the one the company wanted. The extension project still has more hurdles to cross before it’s officially underway. Over the last 30 days, “Oil Pipelines” have just a 14 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
