An attempt by the Trump Administration to remove restrictions on offshore oil drilling is getting strong blowback from important allies and blue states alike. Last week, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced that President Trump had directed him to roll back Obama-era rules and open up approximately 90 percent of U.S. coastal waters to oil and gas exploration, which Zinke says will help the country bring in $11.5 billion in revenues. Apart from the fact that such a number is barely a drop in the bucket of any federal budget, many states were especially concerned about the potential environmental costs that could arise from a spill. By Tuesday, Zinke was giving an exemption to Florida, which happens to have a Republican governor (Rick Scott) who happens to probably be running for a Senate seat in 2018 and who happens to represent a swing state where President Trump happens to own some important properties near the coast that might not benefit from the presence of offshore drilling. Zinke wrote that he supported “the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.” That opened him up to criticism from leaders in states both blue and red -- including California and South Carolina -- who argued that they could make the same case. Over the last 90 days, “Offshore Drilling” has 27 percent positives. –Alex Shultz
