President Donald Trump turned his Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch into a reality show extravaganza on Tuesday night with a live TV announcement, but he now has to face the reality of strong Democratic opposition. Gorsuch, 49, is well-respected by conservatives and even some moderate Democrats, including former Obama Solicitor General Neal Katyal, who wrote an op-ed in The New York Times stating that Gorsuch “brings a sense of fairness and decency to the job, and a temperament that suits the nation’s highest court.” Early indications are that Social approves of Gorsuch, giving him a 57 percent positive rating, but that comes with a caveat—his numbers prior to Wednesday were in the 80s, meaning criticisms are piling up quickly. Progressives are telling Democrats in Congress to do everything in their power to push back against Gorsuch—one, because he’s a Constitutional originalist similar to the late Antonin Scalia and two, because Republicans refused to let Obama nominee Merrick Garland even have a hearing. Still, a few Democratic senators, including Claire McCaskill and Richard Blumenthal, have indicated they would like the Gorsuch nomination to be put up for a vote.
