April signals the beginning of the playoffs for the NBA and NHL, and both leagues are treating fans to some enticing matchups. The NHL’s postseason is a week and a day old, which was just enough time for the Vegas Golden Knights -- an expansion team -- to sweep the Los Angeles Kings. Most of the other series have been competitive, especially the Washington Capitals versus the Columbus Blue Jackets, in which all three games have gone to overtime (Columbus leads 2-1). The NBA gave its squads a few days off after the regular season concluded, so it’s a couple games behind its hockey counterpart. As of Wednesday afternoon, the biggest upsets to date were the Indiana Pacers’ shocking 98-80 Game One victory over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers and the No. 6 seeded New Orleans Pelicans’ 2-0 lead over the No. 3 seeded Portland Trail Blazers. Both the NBA and NHL saw television ratings bumps over the weekend: Up 17 percent compared with 2017 for the NBA, and up 25 percent compared with 2017 for the NHL. Over the past seven days, “NHL playoffs” earn a 72 percent positive score on Social, while “NBA playoffs,” which features a little more spicy talk between fans, are at 53 percent positive over the same time span. –Alex Shultz
