From all indications, mother! is the ultimate high-risk, high-reward movie—viewers are leaving theaters either loving it or absolutely abhorring it. The film premiered last Friday in the U.S. and has a star-studded cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. The plot is hard to follow and features countless biblical allegories, but at its core, mother! is a psychological thriller, and a disturbing one at that. The performance of Lawrence in particular has been lauded in the press, but this film is otherwise the frontrunner for 2017’s most polarizing cinematic experience. Critic Rex Reed writing in the Observer, says: “I hesitate to label it the 'Worst movie of the year' when 'Worst movie of the century' fits it even better.” Meanwhile, Associated Press film writer Lindsey Bahr wrote (glowingly): “My heart has not stopped its anxious pounding, nor my head from spinning since seeing this film. Mother, may I have a Xanax?” Rotten Tomatoes critics scored mother! at 68 percent fresh, but it earned just $7.5 million in its opening weekend. And “Mother + Movie” has just a 27 percent positive score over the last three days on Social, with words driving the vibe like “worst,” grotesque,” “hate” and on the other side of the spectrum, “masterpiece.” --Alex Shultz
