Having kids active on social media has always been a mixed bag, with many parents and experts asserting that they are vulnerable to predators, while others say that younger members of the digital generation will go online no matter what. At least one social network has decided to steer into the skid, though. This week, Facebook launched a special kids mode for its underage Messenger users, and Social is all about it. Messenger Kids, which is racking up 86 percent positives, comes packed with goofy and kid-friendly filters but also allows parents to choose who is on the other end of conversations. Only family members and verified friends are allowed, meaning that no anonymous creeps will be able to contact the children. Of course there are some critics. The Verge writer Casey Newton wrote on Tuesday that Messenger Kids is less about keeping kids safe and more about taking their usage data. With that data, Facebook could adapt to changing online trends years in advance. Worst of all, there’s no way of telling exactly what kind of data Facebook acquires. –Hugo Guzman
