Fresh off their first playoff appearance in eight years, the Miami Dolphins are turning to former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler to keep hope alive in 2017. Cutler, 34, is coming off an injury-plagued, inconsistent season that led to his release from the Bears in March. He hadn’t shown much interest in returning to the NFL until the Dolphins came calling, offering him a one-year, $10 million deal. Under normal circumstances, Miami wouldn’t have reached out and Cutler would likely be pursuing life after football. But that all changed last week after Ryan Tannehill, who was slated to be the starter, suffered a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee that will keep him out for most, if not all, of Miami’s games. During Cutler’s last relatively healthy campaign in 2015, he passed for 3,659 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. But if the Dolphins believe he’ll keep them in the contender category, they might want to taper their expectations—Cutler led the Bears to the postseason once in eight tries. Still, over the last three days, he has a 59 percent positive score on Social. --Alex Shultz
