Despite international condemnation, the Trump Administration and the Israeli government reveled in the decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem. At Monday’s ceremony marking the opening of the embassy, President Trump (by video), son-in-law Jared Kushner, and others spoke of peace for the region – while a grinning Ivanka Trump played hostess. Some 40 miles away at the Gaza border, more than 60 Palestinians were being killed and thousands of others injured by the Israeli military. Palestinians were protesting again because of the embassy move and the upcoming 70th anniversary of Israel’s founding. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed the killings on the Palestinian political group Hamas, tweeting that it’s “a terrorist organization that states its intention to destroy Israel and it sends thousands of people to breach the border fence to realize this goal.” Netanyahu later added that the protesters were paid, taking a page out of the conspiracy theories that have swirled from right-wing sources in the U.S. The Trump Administration doubled down on Netanyahu’s remarks, and White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said the events that had unfolded were actually an “unfortunate propaganda attempt” by Hamas, while accidentally (or maybe not accidentally) calling Gaza “southern Israel.” Over the past two days, “Israel + Gaza” has a 20 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
