It’s that time of year again. Millions of Americans are rushing to their doctors for vaccines, and the reason for the season is the flu. Although the flu is present year-round, cold winters force people indoors, meaning that flu cases can spread like rumors in stuffy offices, schools and homes. And this year looks particularly bad, warns the Centers for Disease Control, which said that flu cases this year have nearly doubled compared with 2016. Moreover, those flu vaccines doctors recommend may not help at all. According to the scientific journal Eurosurveillance, Australia’s vaccine batch was only 10 percent effective this year, and the doses North America will use this flu season are made of the same stuff. The CDC made sure to caution that Australia’s results might be misleading since North America could be under attack from a different strain vulnerable to the flu shots. But Social isn’t buying it, and confidence in the shots has nose-dived in the past month. They get 67 percent negatives, and much of the buzz is about whether they will have any effect at all. –Hugo Guzman
