As more disturbing information about Cambridge Analytica’s role in elections around the world continues to seep out, much of Social is angry at Facebook and concerned about its lack of oversight. Over the weekend, news broke that Cambridge Analytica had obtained the private information of 50 million Facebook users, which the voter-profiling firm used to assist the Trump campaign. Although some of the users volunteered that information, the vast majority did not, and many of those volunteering thought they were doing so as part of an academic study rather than for political purposes. Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica from using its services after the reports broke and has maintained that no passwords were leaked. But that doesn’t explain away why Facebook didn’t attempt to verify the intent of the supposed “study.” It's another blow to FB’s credibility, coming hard on the heels of stories detailing how Russian propaganda has been rampant on the social media site. On Saturday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) tweeted: “This is a major breach that must be investigated. It’s clear these platforms can’t police themselves. I've called for more transparency & accountability for online political ads. They say ‘trust us.’ Mark Zuckerberg needs to testify before Senate Judiciary.” Over the last seven days, “Facebook + Data” has a 19 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
