Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan narrowly won a historic referendum that will radically alter the way the country is governed. The constitutional overhaul closed down the parliamentary system and expanded the powers of the president. Erdogan said this system will promote stability within Turkey (which barely avoided a military coup last year), but critics say that Erdogan is looking to become a dictator. The results of the vote were narrow, with only 51.3 percent of voters approving. Although Erdogan won, he certainly didn’t have Social’s vote. Immediately prior to the balloting, Erdogan was hitting 71 percent negatives. That shot up to 60 percent positive over the past three days, thanks to enthusiastic buzz about the win. Erdogan also got a call from an old friend. President Donald Trump rang him up on Monday to offer his congratulations as many were decrying this turn away from democracy. The two are well acquainted: In 2012, Erdogan presided over opening ceremonies for twin Trump towers in Istanbul.
