Sean Spicer’s appearance aside, the 2017 Emmy Awards were met with applause and approval on Sunday night. Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the Emmys honed in on the topic no one can escape: President Donald Trump and the state of politics in the U.S. After an opening musical number to that effect, Colbert waved at the TV cameras during his monologue, saying hello to POTUS, whom he assumed was watching. And to really get viewers’ attention, Colbert invited former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer to the stage to brag about how large the audience size was. The bit got Social talking, but not necessarily in a good way. Actor Zach Braff tweeted, “I'm not ready to laugh ‘with’ Sean Spicer. I think he is an evil, opportunistic liar that hurt our country.” The rest of the show was received well, however, thanks to some tearjerker acceptance speeches and a diverse group of winners. The Handmaid’s Tale took home “outstanding drama series,” Donald Glover was awarded “outstanding lead actor in a comedy series” and “outstanding directing in a comedy series” for Atlanta; Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon grabbed some hardware for their roles on Saturday Night Live; and Lena Waithe gave a particularly heartfelt speech after she and Aziz Ansari won “outstanding writing for a comedy series” for Master of None. Overall, “Emmys 2017” pulled in a solid 79 percent positive score on Social over the last day. --Alex Shultz
