Mainstream media has been more under fire than ever since the 2016 presidential campaign bred an epidemic of fake news, online and on-air. According to a Harvard-Harris Poll in May, 84 percent of voting Americans said that mainstream news is unreliable. Although that skepticism may have been enhanced by fake news found on Facebook and elsewhere, Social seems to think the media is doing its part to destroy its own cred. ESPN is in trouble after SportsCenter host Jemele Hill said on Twitter that President Donald Trump is a white supremacist and that most of his inner circle shared those beliefs. The White House pushed back, with Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders calling Hill’s comments a “fireable offense.” Social is not happy with ESPN, too, and that might have something to with charges by Sanders and on sports radio that the network is showing a double-standard. Earlier this year, it admonished another SportsCenter host, Linda Cohn, who is white, for simply suggesting that ESPN was losing its base by becoming too political, according to Business Insider. Hill, who is African American, has not been suspended for her arguably much more incendiary tweet, though ESPN called her comments inappropriate, and NPR said the net “had talked to her.” The different Hill-Cohn responses are scoring a 94 percent negative sentiment rating for ESPN. –Hugo Guzman
