Dove is in hot water after one of its online ads went viral for all the wrong reasons over the weekend. The ad was a three-second video intended to represent how all women can enjoy Dove's products. But the order in which the people in the clip were presented has been roundly criticized because it transitions from a black woman taking off her shirt to a white woman underneath. As The Independent’s Biba Kang noted, “Many beauty products are hinged upon the ideal of whiteness,” and there are dozens of historical examples portraying dark skin as “dirty,” with white skin being the ideal. Dove took the advertisement down and issued a boilerplate response, saying: “An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused.” That half-apology didn’t satisfy much of Social, including director Ava DuVernay, who tweeted: “You can do better than ‘missed the mark.’ Flip + diminishing. Deepens your offense. You do good work. Have been for years. Do better here.” Perhaps a second, more sincere apology would be a good idea. Over the last two days, “Dove + Ad” has an 11 percent positive score on Social. --Alex Shultz
