A slow dribble of a story involving Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer has quickly morphed into a full-on flood of a controversy. On Tuesday, after Trump Jr. was informed by The New York Times that the paper was going to publish emails of his plans to meet with someone thought to be connected to the Russian government, Trump Jr. decided to put the emails out himself. The intermediary of the eventual meeting, music publicist Rob Goldstone, made clear that the “Crown prosecutor of Russia” had “official documents” and other potentially helpful information about Hillary Clinton to convey to the Trumps. Trump Jr. looped Jared Kushner and then-campaign manager Paul Manafort into the meeting, which Trump Jr. says was ultimately not fruitful. President Trump responded on Tuesday with a short statement, saying, “My son is a high-quality person, and I applaud his transparency.” That doesn’t appear to be the opinion of others in the White House. The Daily Beast reports senior aides long ago nicknamed Trump Jr. as Fredo, “referring to Fredo Corleone, the insecure and weak failure of a son in The Godfather series.” And when the story broke, “Donald Trump Jr + Russia” had just a 17 percent positive score on Social.
