Video games might seem like a fool-proof form of entertainment. After all, even poorly reviewed games such as No Man’s Sky and the latest Star Wars: Battlefront sell relatively well. But over the years a handful of interactive mistakes have proven even the most enthusiastic gamer dead wrong about the medium’s reliability. Most of these titles fail due to bad game play or graphics, but one video game stands out for being an “absolute triumph of boredom” according to the British magazine ShortList. In Desert Bus, a mini-game included with the unreleased Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors, the player must complete a real-time simulated bus drive from Tucson to Las Vegas. You can’t exceed 45 miles per hour, and off-roading will stall the bus, forcing you to be towed back to Tucson in real-time. Worst of all, the road veers slightly, requiring constant attention from players. The full game takes eight hours to complete, however, it has developed a cult following for being so mind-numbing. Could that cult following translate into success for the virtual reality re-release, which hit the digital distribution platform Steam on Nov. 27? Not a chance, says Social. Desert Bus’ VR release, at 82 percent in the red, is crashing into a wall of negativity. And it’s free. –Hugo Guzman
