Since the moment President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2016 presidential election, Democrats have been focusing on the 2018 midterms, seeking to retake Congress and roll back Trump's most extreme policies. Special elections, such as the Alabama Senate election to fill the seat vacated by now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Pennsylvania's special election to replace Rep. Tim Murphy (a Republican who resigned in disgrace), have both ended in victories for Democrat candidates. But despite those gains and early signs of electoral success, Social is still cautious about Democratic chances later this year. The buzz about Dems is positive, at 55 percent, but social media fears that Democratic control in some safe areas, like much of California, could be undone. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) couldn't secure her own party's endorsement for reelection (too centrist), while in other areas, such as the San Diego area’s 49th congressional district, so many Democrats are running that they could end up splitting the vote and enabling a unified Republican front. "If you’ve been in politics long enough, you’ve heard the phrase, 'As goes California, so goes the nation,'” warned USA Today columnist Kurt Bardella. –Hugo Guzman
