Pixar and Disney continue to churn out the hits, this time with the release of Coco. The animated movie, directed by Lee Unkrich, tells the tale of Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old boy from a small village in Mexico who ends up in the Land of the Dead during Día de Muertos with a limited amount of time to return to his living family. Coco overtook Justice League at the box office, grossing $49 million over the weekend and $71 million overall since its domestic debut on Nov. 22. The U.S. is far from the only country where the film is doing well: It recently became the highest-selling movie in the history of Mexico, where it’s been out in theaters for about a month. As Rolling Stone writes, “Pixar's Day-of-the-Dead gem pays loving tribute to Mexican culture with animation that brims over with visual pleasures, comic energy and emotional wallop.” Rotten Tomatoes rates Coco as certifiably fresh, with a 96 percent critics’ score and a 97 percent audience score. Over the last three days, Social has weighed in similarly, giving “Coco + movie” a 90 percent positive score, the same as IMDB's audience score. –Alex Shultz
