President Trump reversed course yesterday and rolled back his much-attacked policy of separating parents from children at the southern border—a move he tried to blame on Democrats. His U-turn came after congressional members of both parties took to Twitter to criticize what many on Capitol Hill—and across the globe—decried as an inhumane practice, though it was defended earlier in the week by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. From the left, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) tweeted: “The Trump administration policy of separating children from their parents at our border is a national disgrace … This is a moral abomination. It can and must be stopped.” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) joined a growing chorus of Democrats calling for Nielsen to get the boot. “@SecNielsen must resign,” Pelosi wrote. “This is not an immigration issue, it is a humanitarian issue. Children are being used by the Trump Admin to create leverage, with a goal of passing Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. I struggle to think of anything more barbaric. #FamiliesBelongTogether.” Outgoing conservative Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) made his opinion clear after news broke that babies were being held by immigration services, tweeting: ‘"Tender Age’ shelters for toddlers? This gets even worse as the layers are peeled back. End the policy, Mr. President.” Others on the Right spoke up as well, though many still support criminally prosecuting anyone who crosses the border illegally. And some in Congress, like Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), phrased their complaints carefully. “Yes separating families is cruel, but so is a policy that encourages parents to bring their kids on a dangerous journey,” Rubio wrote. “Instead lets [sic] #DetainandMaintain families together.” Over the past 30 days, sentiment on Twitter member of Congress on "Children + Parents” posted just 15 percent positives in objection to the policy. –Alex Shultz
