Although most of the stories going viral of late are headline-grabbing investigative pieces in the realm of politics, The New Yorker found success in a very different genre: short fiction. Over the weekend, a piece entitled “Cat Person” sent the Internet into a tizzy, offering a relatable experience for women, in particular, about dating in your 20s and 30s – including disappointing and disturbing sexual encounters. As the story consumed Social, its genre was lost on readers, many of whom assumed “Cat Person” was actually a work of nonfiction. The writer of the piece, Kristen Roupenian, had “fewer than 200 followers on Twitter” before the hoopla began, according to The New York Times. As of Tuesday morning, she was up to more than 5,000 followers. She said that she wrote the story after one experience but that the themes involved “were accumulated over decades, not drawn from a single bad date.” As with anything that goes viral, “Cat Person” was initially praised, then faced backlash for being praised too much and has since settled somewhere in between. Over the last seven days, “Cat Person + Story” has a 61 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
