A future with plentiful food and less disease could be right around the corner, depending on how scientists choose to utilize a powerful gene-editing tool named CRISPR. The technology “harnesses the immune system of bacteria to snip individual genes, either knocking them out or even inserting new ones in their place,” according to Vox. With more time for development, CRISPR could eventually help create plants and foods that are unaffected by weather conditions or other factors that would ordinarily kill them off. There is also the possibility of preventing or treating cancers, sexually transmitted diseases, and Alzheimer’s. Potential concerns abound, however, including gene-editing embryos in ways that many would argue equate to a new eugenics movement. For now, CRISPR garners a fairly positive reaction on Social – 63 percent of users approve. But the Vibe highlights worries the technology will surely face in the years to come, with such sentiments as “terror” and “threat.” This is the stuff sci-fi movies are made of.
