Buzzfeed’s decision to publish the salacious, unconfirmed 35-page dossier regarding president-elect Donald Trump’s alleged antics in Moscow has been met with near-unanimous condemnation. Buzzfeed registers just a 15 percent positive score on Social, certainly not aided by Trump referring to the website as a “pathetic pile of garbage” during his Wednesday press conference (though Buzzfeed has been selling merchandise off that criticism). Other news organizations like CNN have been distancing themselves from Buzzfeed’s move to put the entire report out into the open, instead focusing on the story that a summary of the report was shared with President Obama and Trump. The president-elect and his team have denied all of the allegations made in the dossier, which was the result of months of opposition research primarily by a former British MI6 agent now said to be hiding. But according to Business Insider, Buzzfeed CEO Jonah Peretti released a note to his staff on Wednesday saying, in part, “We stand with [editor in chief] Ben [Smith’s] decision to publish this newsworthy document, which was reported on by multiple news outlets and seen by high level government officials.” And CJR, the online Columbia Journalism Review, perhaps looking for some buzz of its own, mounted a vigorous defense, writing: “The media’s full-throated condemnation of BuzzFeed is both self-righteous and self-serving.” But Social – and the rest of America – loves a repentant sinner. Might be better to apologize, seek forgiveness and feel the lovebuzz.
