Assault rifles, like the ones used by Stephen Paddock in last weekend's Las Vegas shooting, are always at the forefront of gun-control conversations. But after a search of Paddock’s room, attention has turned to a key tool in his arsenal, one that makes semi-automatic rifles fire like fully-automatic ones. Called a bump stock, the device replaces a gun’s stock and uses recoil to pull the trigger faster than a person could ordinarily. Since the trigger still has to be pulled between every shot, it technically doesn't violate any laws. But that could soon change. After the Vegas shooting, lawmakers around the country are starting to question whether bump stocks violate the spirit of laws against fully-automatic rifles. “I don’t understand the use of this bump stock,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) said in The New York Times. Even the NRA has come out against the device, announcing on Thursday that the bump stock and tools like it should be subject to federal regulation. Social’s opinion about bump stocks is solidly – but not wildly – negative: The faux fully-auto device gets a 62 percent thumbs-down reaction. –Hugo Guzman
