The President knows the spending bill is his best last best chance to deliver on his campaign promise to build a continuous wall along our souther border. He may also think failure to deliver is an existential threat to his base and his reelection bid. In an effort to take his case to the people the President delivered a recycled speech to the nation on Tuesday. His same arguments with the same factual claims met with the same reaction from much of the press and his opponents. The President, who is often accused of playing fast and loose with the facts, is accused of stretching those facts even further on this issue, including claiming people want his wall. Sure some do, but neither poll results, nor social media are on his side on this one. Polling results find a majority in opposition to the wall. A Quinnipiac poll from mid December found 54 percent of those polled opposed the wall while 43 percent supported it. Similarly, a Harvard CAPS/Harris survey from December 24 to 26 found 56 percent of survey takers opposed to the wall while 44 percent were supportive. Social media is even less of a fan of the border wall with support slipping by the day. The day before the President's speech Twitter users were talking 35.9 percent positive about the wall, well below the earlier polls. However, today that support has slipped even further to 34 percent positive. Over the last two weeks the high water mark for the border wall came on New Year's Day when Twitter spiked at 53 percent positive on the wall, however, support has been Humpty Dumpty even since.
