When President Donald Trump called for more transparency during the 2016 campaign, he probably was not talking about his proposed wall on the Mexican border. Fast forward, and Trump said this week that the wall would have to be see-through to prevent bags of drugs being tossed over it and hitting an unsuspecting passerby. The problems with funding the wall are also in plain sight. Democrats in the divided House have promised to block any bill that includes funding for the wall, and that includes the 2018 homeland security funding bill released on Tuesday. In addition to the $1.6 billion going towards the border wall, the bill also includes money for 500 new Border Patrol agents and 1,600 additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement staff. Democrats and even some Republicans are calling the project a waste of money. North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) even threatened a government shutdown over it. The last two weeks have shown that although Social is split, it sympathizes with Meadows. The border wall gets 68 percent negative sentiment online, and while Social admits the wall could be “beautiful,” it also calls it “impractical” and “ineffective.”
