Under the Obama Administration, policies were put in place to encourage colleges to consider race during the admissions process as a way of increasing diversity. This was part of a broader Affirmative Action push, which narrowly survived a 2016 Supreme Court case in which the majority of justices—including the outgoing Anthony Kennedy—agreed race is a reasonable factor in college admissions. But Affirmative Action policies appear to be in serious trouble now that swing-voter Kennedy is out the door and the Trump Administration is axing Obama-era guidelines in favor of “race-blind” admission standards. The decision was announced on Tuesday, marking the latest example of Trump blowing up anything and everything associated with his predecessor. While the previous directive and the new directive aren’t laws, The New York Times reports, “School officials who keep their race-conscious admissions policies intact would do so knowing that they could face a Justice Department investigation or lawsuit, or lose funding from the Education Department.” The “race-blind” standard has been applied before, most recently during the presidency of George W. Bush. And over the past 90 days, “Affirmative Action” has a 61 percent negative score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
