Years before his 2016 campaign through flyover America took him to the White House, Donald Trump railed against the U.S. trade deficit. Imports from abroad, particularly China, hurt the American economy and destroy companies that can't compete with cheap goods, the President has long argued. Last week, Trump made good on campaign promises to do something about what he sees as an inequitable situation by authorizing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The tariffs have been lauded by producers such as U.S. Steel Corp. and AK Steel Holding Corp., according to Reuters, but other American corporations are not so thrilled. Much of the steel industry depends on importing slabs of steel from countries like Russia and turning them into high-quality sheets for making such things as cars and boats. As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote: “If rising aluminum and steel prices harm powerboat sales, by pricing some consumers out of the market, it’s going to send a wave across the boating industry.” Social media is taking note of the unintended effects of the tariffs and letting Trump know of its displeasure: His Twitter handle has been inundated with feedback on the tariffs, 82 percent of which is negative. –Hugo Guzman
