Dianne Feinstein has emerged victorious in five previous Senate elections, but her sixth campaign is presenting additional challenges (and challengers) that could unseat her. Sen. Feinstein (D-Calif.) announced last Monday she would seek another term, and considering she won in 2012 by 25 points over Republican Elizabeth Emken, you’d think she would be a safe bet in 2018. But Feinstein will be 85 years old by then and will face a much stronger opponent. President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate, Kevin de León, announced on Sunday he will be running in 2018, giving voters a younger, progressive choice compared with the more moderate Feinstein. California has a blanket primary system in which all candidates face off regardless of party, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the general. That means Feinstein and de León could siphon votes from each other, opening the door for a Republican in a deeply blue state. But more likely, it could lead to an all-Democratic general election, as was the case during the 2016 Senate race between Kamala Harris and Loretta Sanchez (which Harris won resoundingly). Over the last 90 days, @SenFeinstein has a 48 percent positive score on Social, which, for a sitting senator, is actually fairly high. --Alex Shultz
