Last Thursday during a meeting about immigration reform, President Trump referred to some African nations and Haiti as either “shithole countries” or “shithouse countries.” His characterizations were publicly denounced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and seem to have been privately confirmed by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). A White House spokesperson didn’t deny the remarks, and at first, two other attendees at the meeting, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Sen. David Perdue (R.-Ga.), could muster just a joint statement in which they said they did not recall the President using any such language. But by the Sunday morning talk shows, both senators were ramping up their defense of POTUS. Cotton said, “I did not hear derogatory comments about individuals or persons,” while Perdue took it a step further, adding, “I’m telling you he did not use that word.” They also took swipes at Sen. Durbin, accusing him of embellishing private conversations. But it doesn’t look like their unabashed loyalty is paying dividends, as the online crowd appears not to believe them. Over the last day, @SenDavidPerdue has a 22 percent positive score on Twitter, while @SenTomCotton is even lower at 19 percent positive. –Alex Shultz
