When 2003’s The Room premiered, no one could have predicted that Tommy Wiseau’s debut as screenwriter, actor and director would become the cultural phenomenon it is today. Budgeted at $6 million, it grossed only $1,600 and was universally panned as one of the worst movies in the history of filmmaking due to its terrible acting and incoherent story. But through years of midnight screenings, Wiseau managed to build a cult following as the king of unintentional comedy. In 2013, Wiseau’s best friend and co-star Greg Sestero wrote The Disaster Artist, an award-winning memoir about the film, and last week saw the premier of the film adaptation of that book. Starring James Franco as Wiseau and Dave Franco as Sestero, The Disaster Artist has been universally praised by critics for its unflinching and triumphant portrayal of Wiseau, who makes up for his lack of skill with sheer earnestness. Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB are 91% positive and 83% positive respectively, and Twitter ranks the movie just between those two sites, at 86 percent positive. –Hugo Guzman
