The NHL playoffs begin on Wednesday with a five-game slate, featuring the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins in a matchup against the upstart Columbus Blue Jackets. This year’s race to the Stanley Cup promises to be a wide-open affair, with only a few potential frontrunners that are far from guaranteed to advance deep into the bracket. In the Eastern Conference, the Washington Capitals are the top overall seed for the second consecutive season after going 55-19-8. But they couldn’t advance past the second round in 2016 and haven’t made it to the conference finals during the Alex Ovechkin era. They’ll face heavy resistance from the Penguins once again, though Pittsburgh is dealing with a fair number of injuries that could derail its chance to repeat. In the Western Conference, the top four teams during the regular season were separated by just six points, led by the 50-23-9 Chicago Blackhawks. Plenty of attention will be paid to the Edmonton Oilers, whose 20-year-old captain, Connor McDavid, is making his first postseason appearance against the San Jose Sharks. Social will be keeping a close eye on the #StanleyCup playoffs as a whole, which earn a 79 percent positive score.
