Author Gillian Flynn had already made it big-time when her 2012 novel Gone Girl was adapted as a highly successful film. But her 2006 debut novel, Sharp Objects, is also getting the Hollywood treatment, this time as an eight-part HBO series that is now two episodes in. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, the TV version of Sharp Objects stars acclaimed actress Amy Adams as Camille Preaker, a troubled reporter suffering from alcoholism, with a tendency to self-harm, who is sent on assignment to her hometown in Missouri to investigate a pair of grisly murders. Camille’s mother, Adora (played by Patricia Clarkson), is known as the socialite of the town and is disdainful of her elder daughter while fawning over her teenager, Amma (played by Eliza Scanlen). As the Los Angeles Times writes, “The gripping series is full of riddles waiting to be deciphered, and phenomenal performances by Adams and Clarkson pull viewers closer to whatever danger lies beneath with each hour-long episode.” On Rotten Tomatoes, Sharp Objects has a 96 percent fresh score from critics and a 71 percent audience score. Social’s reaction is more in line with that of viewers, giving #SharpObjects 74 percent positives over the past seven days. –Alex Shultz
