Eight installments in, and the Fast and the Furious franchise is showing no signs of slowing down. The Fate of the Furious was given a global release at the end of last week (premiering in the U.S. on April 14), and it’s racking up obscene amounts of money. We’re talking $100.2 million in America alone, plus $432.3 million more worldwide, which combines to $532.5 million overall. That breaks the previous record set in 2015 by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The familiar cast of characters is back—Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese, Ludacris, plus big-name stars like Jason Statham and Charlize Theron. The major plot point this time around is that Vin Diesel’s character, Dom, appears to betray his friends to work with a mysterious woman named Cipher (played by Theron). And there are, of course, plenty of fancy cars and explosions to be had. Rotten Tomatoes gives The Fate of the Furious a solid 64 percent fresh score, while Social has shifted a full gear higher, at 77 percent positive.
