The election of President Trump has exposed the frailty of the Democratic Party, which is the minority in both the House and the Senate and controls just 16 governorships nationwide. But poll after poll in recent months has pointed to the potential for a “blue wave” this November, with Dems easily taking back the House while making big gains in statewide races. (The Senate is a significantly more volatile situation, with only a few vulnerable Republicans up for re-election.) Percentages have fluctuated though the data website FiveThirtyEight has long maintained a healthy lead for Democrats on the generic ballot. That advantage is currently 46.6 percent to 40.8 percent. Still, progressives have reason to worry: Other than the Alabama senatorial race in which Doug Jones defeated alleged pedophile Roy Moore, Democrats have struggled to actually win special elections. They are, however, making up big margins in voting turnout compared with 2016. The President, who often has an alternate version of the news, is tweeting to his followers about a “red wave,” something he has mentioned on multiple occasions. The Wall Street Journal recently wrote an editorial on the subject, saying: "Our sense is that Republican voters haven’t recognized how much jeopardy the party is in. Many are content to listen only to their safe media spaces that repeat illusions about a 'red wave' and invoke 2016 when the media said Mr. Trump couldn’t win.” There is less than three months to go before it’s clear which side has the right read. Over the past 30 days, #BlueWave has a 51 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
