After months of media blackout, the reviews are starting to come in on Blade Runner 2049, the hotly anticipated sequel to 1988’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner. The visual effects (sometimes a stumbling block for sci-fi) are being touted as some of the best in cinema. Among the highlights: CGI characters seamlessly perform alongside very real ones, like Ana de Armas’ turn as Ryan Gosling’s AI companion, and Los Angeles is transformed from glitzy entertainment capital into cyberpunk dystopia. In fact, some critics have even suggested that the visuals overshadow a dense storyline that is unlikely to pull in anyone who wasn’t a fan of the original. There might be some truth to that: 2049 made only $31.5 million in its opening weekend. But on Social, those complaints are “lost like tears in rain.” 2049 gets 84 percent positive sentiments, and much of that enthusiasm may be due to the visual genius of director Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins, his go-to cinematographer. Deakins, who also shot The Shawshank Redemption, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village and 2012’s James Bond epic Skyfall, has 13 Oscar nominations under his belt -- and not a single win. Will Blade Runner finally break his curse? Social feels confident about that, calling his work “stunning” and “a masterpiece.” –Hugo Guzman
