Black-ish made its Season Four debut on Tuesday, and series creator Kenya Barris said the opening episode was “one of my most proud moments as a television producer.” The ABC comedy focused on Juneteenth, the holiday marking the official end to slavery in the United States (June 19, 1865), and how it barely gets any recognition even as Americans continue to celebrate Christopher Columbus (who massacred and enslaved indigenous people). Lead character Dre, played by Anthony Anderson, makes that argument to his kids’ teacher, who puts on a Columbus Day play early in the episode. At his advertising agency, Dre later indicates that he wants to work with singer Aloe Blacc on a campaign to raise awareness about Juneteenth. The show also features a cartoon version of The Roots explaining the holiday, Schoolhouse Rock-style. Social appears to appreciate the message: Over the last day, #Blackish has an 80 percent positive score, with words driving the Vibe like “loving,” “better,” “great” and “amazing.” --Alex Shultz
