With Get Out, Moonlight and other black-focused films taking hold of the Hollywood zeitgeist, it's little wonder that African American superheroes are finally getting their time in the spotlight. Yes, there was Blade in 1998, but from Netflix's Luke Cage to The CW's Black Lightning, the day of the powerful black protagonist is here. But no superhero will get a bigger audience than Black Panther, scheduled for release on Feb. 16. The film follows T'Challa, king of Wakanda, a reclusive yet advanced African kingdom that finds itself thrust into the center of Marvel's unfolding cinematic universe. The earliest reviews are starting to trickle in, and most of the hype is positive. Black Panther gets 78 percent positive sentiments, with Social calling the Afro-futurist film "beautiful" and "exceptional." Some disagree, though. A group on Facebook was shut down last week after plotting to sink Black Panther's Rotten Tomatoes score. Racist film fans? Not quite, since according to CNN, the group that hatched the plot was driven by fans of rival comic book company DC, which has taken some serious hits for sub-par movies in the past few years. That’s super-weird. –Hugo Guzman
