Netflix’s newest hit, 13 Reasons Why, is a raw, emotional journey that viewers are binging to the finish. The show, executive produced by Selena Gomez, is based on Jay Asher’s 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why. It begins with the central plot point of the story—Hannah Baker has killed herself and left behind cassette tapes explaining why she did so and who’s to blame. The tapes are discovered by Clay Jensen (played by Dylan Minnette), who had a crush on Hannah (played by Katherine Langford) and is dealing with the aftermath of her death. As the series progresses, more characters are introduced, and Hannah’s tragic demise begins to take shape. In its review, Variety writes that 13 Reasons Why “wisely humanizes and contextualizes grief, depression, suicide, and the aftereffects of sexual assault through characters and scenarios that viewers will be unlikely to forget.” The show has a 91 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, but the language of Social measures both the love of the show as well as the struggles people have with the difficult subject matters which is why “#13ReasonsWhy”, garners a mixed 53 percent score overall.
