Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona FC’s Lionel Messi have a rivalry that has all but defined association football (better known as soccer in the States), and it seems like every year there’s a new award or trophy to set each player’s fans against each other. The latest is the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award, first handed out last year, and both Ronaldo and Messi have made the short list (along with Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar) for 2017. Although experts say Ronaldo and Messi both have a shot, Ronaldo won it last year, and he’s Social’s favorite to bag the prize again. Ronaldo is at 70 percent positive sentiment online, while Messi trails closely at 66 percent positives. But that result is no surprise for those following the Ronaldo/Messi rivalry on Social. Last year, Messi found himself parked behind Ronaldo by 10 points and pushed back against his rival by skipping the awards ceremony, despite taking second place. If Ronaldo takes the award again this year, will Messi snub the Madrid player again? The answer will come on Oct. 23 in London when the trophies are presented. –Hugo Guzman
